About the event

Sunny Sweeney is country music’s sly conscience, warm but stubborn, sad but funny.

Her new album Rhinestone Requiem, produced with longtime guitarist Harley Husbands, is her sixth since 2006’s Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame.

Recorded at Tommy Detamore’s Cherry Ridge Studio in Floresville, Texas, it draws on the honky tonk traditions of Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon Jennings, and Loretta Lynn.

Born in Houston and raised in East Texas, Sweeney now lives in Hendersonville, Tennessee. She’s also known for hosting two SiriusXM shows, The Sunny Side of Life on Outlaw Country and Sunny Side Up on Willie’s Roadhouse.

Unlike her divorce-fueled last record, Married Alone, this album finds Sweeney in a different place. “This is the first time I’ve made a record when I don’t have relationship problems,” she says.

That shift shows in songs like “Diamonds and Divorce Decrees,” a wry look at the aftermath of a marriage ending, and “Waiting for a Reason to Stay,” a gut-punch about the days after deciding to leave but before you’re gone. Closer “Half Lit in 3/4 Time” pays tribute to honky tonk’s classic instruments, while “Houston Belongs to Me” stakes her claim to the city she loves.
