About the event

Sara Van Buskirk is a Houston-based songwriter and musician whose raw emotion, vivid storytelling, and haunting melodies have carved out a unique space in Americana and Folk.

Shaped by Blues, Gospel, and Roots traditions, Sara grew up listening to Nina Simone, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Mavis Staples, and Janis Joplin, among others — influences that inform a sound both timeless and distinctly her own.

Her releases include the 2010 album “The Place Where You Are,” the 2020 single “Can We Be Friends?,” and the 2024 self-released “Light Me Up,” recorded with members of Houston’s Two Star Symphony.

In December 2023, SVB joined The Tennessee Freedom Singers — alongside Allison Russell, Brittany Howard, Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, and others — to record “Tennessee Rise” at Nashville’s Sound Emporium, culminating in a live performance at Nashville’s City Winery in April 2024.

Recent collaborations include writing and touring with Kam Franklin (of The Suffers), whose debut solo album “Land of The Neon Sun” (Executive Producer: Margo Price) is set for release in early 2025. In 2023, SVB founded Georgia Park Studios and began producing her second full-length album.

A recipient of the 2022 SACI Grant and Houston Arts Alliance funding, SVB’s work has been featured in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Billboard. A Recording Academy voting member and committed advocate for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, Sara Van Buskirk continues creating music that speaks to the soul.
