Steve Poltz likes to aim high, even when his subject matter doesn’t.

“It’s funny. When I write a song, I always think: ‘This is going to be the hugest hit, ever’!” said the former San Diego troubadour, who now lives in Nashville.

“I constantly have delusions. I think I’m swinging for the fences, which I love to do. I’m always excited about some song I just wrote.”

Poltz, who was a mentor to Jewel and co-wrote her 1996 smash, “You Were Meant for Me,” has made 16 albums as a solo artist and as the leader of the San Diego rock band The Rugburns.

Artist Spotlight - Steve Poltz

Here at McGonigel's Mucky Duck, we bring the talented, quirky and creative works of singer and songwriter Steve Poltz to our music venue in Houston. His larger than life personality entertains audiences across the world while his music resonates with a storytelling style that spans genres. On April 19th we will open our doors to audiences that are sure to be fascinated and intrigued by the musical musings of this famous song legend.

Background Basics

Canadian-born and California raised, Steve Poltz used his One Left Shoe album made in 1998 to step out into the music industry. Former member and song leader of the band The Rugburns, Poltz hit songwriting gold when he collaborated with Jewel on the hit song "You Were Meant For Me". His unique style thrills country music lovers because he knows how to "spin a good yarn." Country music is all about how a singer can tell a tale that draws you in and keeps you there.

An Unconventional Virtuoso

Strumming on his trusty guitar as he sings and chats it up with his fan base, Poltz's quirkiness never ends. Smokey Joe, Clackety Clack, Flowerpot and Trailer Trash may be seen accompanying him on his tours. And those aren't human members of his band. They are his faithful guitars! The zany singer's interesting personality and almost manic ministering to his music continue to draw appreciative crowds.

Musical Mania

Quick-witted Steve Poltz is well-known to the greats in the music world and is a veritable music genius in his own right. One album by Poltz called "Answering Machine" is a Neil Young favorite. Compiled of songs inspired by Steve's outgoing messages on his answering machine, the 56 tracks on the album are about 45 seconds long of unique Poltz perspective.

Wry humor, boundless energy, and musical prowess permeate Steve Poltz concerts. Audiences that love the unexpected, love Poltz. Fiercely fingerpicking his way into music history, Steve has collaborated with musical greats like A. J. Croce and the award-winning lyrical genius Canadian Joel Plaskett. Fans love to get their manic as Poltz is notorious for taking fans from snickers to tears. Reminiscent of the slapstick greats, Poltz uses his musical platform to catapult musical catharsis to the masses.
