, 2005, Russian River, California “Very pretty aromas of jasmine and rose petal turning quickly to tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, and a bit of pear.  Roasted hazelnut joins with nougat and almond butter, finishing with a touch of lime and lichen. The wine is clean with a wonderful acid backbone, and it expands from your first sip to your last, offering flavors of citrus, grapefruit, lemon, pear, and kumquat, with subtle vanilla bean and a bit of herbal mushroom. 100% Sangiovese This serious and concentrated wine reveals a dark ruby color, and, initially, a restrained aromatic of attractive black cherry and leather-scented fruit. Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Riserva, Il Veluto, 1997, Italy
A Valpolicella is transformed into an Amarone by the Appassimento process where the best grapes are left to dry for three to four months, turning to raisins, before being pressed and slowly fermented. Il Velluto's Amarone Riserva is a blend of Corvina (70%), Rondinella (20%), and Molinara (10%) that spent 18 months in Slovenian oak barrels. Amarone fans must not miss this wine with its tremendous smoothness and depth.
"Il Veluto" means "the Velvet one" in Italian.
Tasting Notes: A garnet colored wine with a rich nose of raisin and herb aromas. On the palate, it is full of rich red fruit and sweet plum and raisin flavors and a concentrated herb and spice core. This is a classic Amarone, smooth and silky with a long finish. Winemaker Notes - The aromas show dark fruits, licorice, black pepper, and minerals, with Rutherford accents of black olive, peppercorn, and dark cherry. Full-bodied in texture, this wine has pronounced, dense and concentrated flavors of black currant, anise, sweet vanilla and distinctive minerals. Rich tannins. Alexander Valley Vineyards, 2005, Alexander Valley, California
a rich, juicy Cab with an expressive nose of cassis and spice. Flavors of black cherry and cocoa dominate this silky wine, but there are also hints of eucalyptus and mint. Trapiche Iscay Merlot/Malbec, 2004, Argentina
Trapiche’s vineyards are situated in the Mendoza province at the foot of the Andes. "Iscay" means "two" in the original Inca language that was used by the indigenous population of the region around the Andes at that time when the Europeans came to Argentina. Trapiche Iscay was so named to honor the Incan culture because the word “iscay” symbolizes the combination of the two grapes, Merlot and Malbec used to make this wine. It is a particularly elegant wine of a fine claret color. Its has an intensive bouquet of plums and spices with hints of chocolate and has super velvety tannins.

Cotes du Rhone, Parallele “45”, 2005, France
The exquisite blend of Syrah and Grenache is fruity, colourful, spicy, and fresh.
Robert Parker found this wine rich and sexy. Its name is derived from the 45th Parallel of north latitude which passes just 2km South of the Jaboulet Winery.  

Perrin and Fils Gigondas (jhee-gon-dahs), 2004, France
The muscleman of the Southern Rhone, Gigondas is situated right under the rugged, rocky range of the Dentelles de Montmirail - a sign of the rustic, edgy flavor found in wines from the area. The region, once a Cotes-du-Rhone village, earned its own appellation in 1971. Producing reds and roses, Gigondas creates top quality reds sometimes rivaling its southwest neighbor, Chateauneuf-du-pape. The wines of Gigondas are muscular and robust. This wine is spicy, leathery, soulful juice with a deep ruby color. The nose is reminiscent of red fruit jams, with a mineral and earthy touch. A generous and powerful wine that is robust with its firm tannins well integrated.

 

 

Turnbull, Old Bull Red, 2005, Napa Valley
Old Bull is Napa fruit. Big and black, it's mostly merlot with wild sidekicks, tempranillo, sangiovese, petite sirah and barbera. Allow it time to open to a soft, full richness, big fruit in vanilla cinnamon cream--worth the wait.
