Nic Cowan
Showtime 730 PM
Cowan’s songs are designed to spark a good time. Particularly in tracks like “Gutter Song,” “Wrong Side” and the title track, his bad-boy persona comes through loud and clear. But the approach is seasoned with a humorous wink, and is interspersed with heartfelt, laid-back cuts like “I Won’t Let Go” and “Reno.” While it’s sure to spark audience sing-alongs, it’s not calculated in the slightest. As Cowan sings in “New Shit”: “Let me set this straight from the start / I don’t do this so I get on the charts.”
As Cowan tells it, “Hard Headed” was written about a man’s resistance to being controlled by a lover. Despite that, it’s become a gender-spanning audience favorite. “I thought it was going to be an anthem for men everywhere, but it turns out women love this song,” he notes with a smirk. “They come up to me all the time, saying, ‘that’s my jam!’ I think at the end of the day everyone likes to think of themselves as a little bit hard headed and not easily influenced.”

Lucy Kaplansky
Showtime 6 PM
She started out singing in Chicago bars. Then, barely out of high school, Lucy Kaplansky took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Bill Morrissey, Cliff Eberhardt, and others—where she fit right in. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact, The New York Times said it was “easy to predict stardom for her.” But then Lucy dropped it all.
Convinced that her calling was in another direction, Lucy left the musical fast track to pursue a doctorate in Psychology. Upon completing her degree, Dr. Kaplansky took a job at a New York hospital working with chronically mentally ill adults, and also started a private practice. Yet she continued to sing. Lucy was often pulled back into the studio by her friends, (who now had contracts with record labels) wanting her to sing on their albums. She harmonized on Colvin’s Grammy-winning Steady On, on Nanci Griffith’s Lone Star State of Mind and Little Love Affairs, and on four of John Gorka’s albums. She also landed soundtrack credits, singing with Suzanne Vega on Pretty in Pink and with Griffith on The Firm, and several commercial credits as well—including “The Heartbeat of America” for Chevrolet.
Then Shawn Colvin—who was itching to produce a record—hooked up with Lucy, her ex-singing partner. They went into the studio, and it all came together. When Lucy’s solo tapes got into the hands of Bob Feldman, president of Red House Records, he was blown away. Suddenly, Lucy was back in the music business. She signed with Red House and started playing gigs. Red House released The Tide in 1994 to rave reviews, and within six months Lucy signed with a major booking agency—Fleming Tamulevich & Associates—and began touring so much it required leaving her two psychologist positions behind.

This uncommonly mature 21-year-old singer-songwriter’ s Nonesuch debut balances the warm-hearted with the cold-blooded. Tell Me is a stunningly forthright 11-song set that addresses late-night longing, serial heartbreak, and intoxicatingly dangerous liaisons conducted in dimly lit barrooms or roadside motels. By the end, the only heart intact is Mayfield’ s own. It’ s as if she’ d stripped the sentimentality and ruefulness from a bunch of classic country songs, leaving only stark emotion. The Black Keys’ singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach, who produced and engineered Tell Me at his Easy Eye Sound System studio in Akron, Ohio, matches Mayfield’ s candor with eerily minimal, brilliantly constructed tracks that keep her mesmerizing, unadorned voice front and center.

Some of these melodies carry delightful reminders of what’s come before: a little girl-group reference here, a little Stax or Motown flavoring there. Petula Clark and Lulu would be at home next to Suzanna. But there’s an earthiness, too; a sprinkle of what Choffel calls “a dark grit.” Blues-colored, to be exact.

Austin-based singer/songwriter and guitarist Jimmy LaFave brings a passionate rock & roll energy to his original folk songs, whether he's playing solo or with a band.
On his latest effort, Cimarron Manifesto, singer/songwriter Jimmy LaFave pays his respects to the Oklahoma roots of his hero, Woody Guthrie, and his own years in the territory. LaFave, himself a native Texan, was born in Wills Point and lived there until his family moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma during his school years.
Quite a fixture on the Austin music scene, upon his return to Texas in 1986, LaFave racked up critical accolades among not only Austin–based publications, but periodicals across the country and two Austin Music Awards, in addition to other laurels. LaFave’s visibility on the musical radar increased with an appearance on Austin City Limits and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to Woody Guthrie, where he was hand–picked by Guthrie’s daughter to appear.

Few bands can proudly claim to have recorded their first album acoustically. For a band to do so with success, they would need raw-vintage talent, a ballsy temperament and just the right amount of dirty faith. Add these together with a lively rock show and you get The Dirty River Boys.

Rarely has there been a more aptly named singer/songwriter than Greg Trooper. Over three decades, the New Jersey native has soldiered on through the victories and setbacks unique to a career dedicated to music, proving through gestures large and small that he's one of our best. It's evident in the company he keeps, the critics who praise his recordings, the fans who invest in his shows and the artists who learn his songs, wishing they' ;d written them. It is most evident in what Amazon.com calls his "catalog of superbly crafted albums." This impressive discography testifies for an artist who has always served the song and the music above all other things.
